The Compton City Council formally recognizes Kevin's Cause Suicide Prevention and Awareness, a nonprofit launched by Compton native Wanda Jackson, second from right, earlier this year to help raise awareness about suicide within the Black community, during the Tuesday, Sept. 21, city council meeting. Jackson named the organization after her late son, who took his own life in 2008. She noted during the presentation that suicide is among the leading causes of death among African-American males. Others pictured are, from left, Councilwoman Yvonne Arceneaux, Councilwoman Barbara Calhoun, Deborah Hill, Councilwoman Lillie Dobson, Shaunda Hill, Councilman Dr. Willie O. Jones and, at far right, Mayor Eric J. Perrodin. For additional information on Kevin's Cause, visit www.kevinscause.org. —Photos by Shon Smith of D'Angelo's Photos

I know that no matter how much I speak about Kevin, it will never bring my son back. I know because I’ve tried. And neither will a million tears, I know because that’s how much I’ve cried. I also know that by sharing my story I can’t help Kevin, but I can help others to live.
I realize that my son had to have been in the deepest kind of pain to end his precious life. I still hurt and feel this tremendous pain tugging at the core of my soul when I think about how, in the last moments of Kevin’s life when he walked into my garage for the last time, he must have felt so all alone.

Wanda Jackson grew up in Compton. For many years she had a good life with her husband and family in a city she loves. "We were an average family,"she told The Bulletin. "We had our share of ups and downs, but overall we were happy."But everything changed on Aug. 26, 2008. That's the day Wanda found her son dead by his own hand in the garage of their home.
